Week 3: Welcome to The Anthropocene - Post 3
Welcome to The Anthropocene - My Thoughts
This week I learned about epochs and gained a much larger understanding of the magnitude of change humans cause. This week was a lot of notes and a lot of information, but in the end the message is simple: We are in the Anthropocene, there is no going back, now it's up to us to make our future positive. The lecture that talked about dystopian novels and film was what stood out to me the most. I have long been a fan of books like The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and films like Mad Max. I never noticed that this trend of a future degraded Earth is happening at the same time its revealed that humans are changing the environment. This week I feel encouraged to seek out books and film that represent a more positive future. I believe there is no way society will except human caused climate change as long as excepting it means that the conditions of Mad Max are our future. Professor Rockstrom takes a very positive approach to the Anthropocene, and it is refreshing. Within the Anthropocene there is a huge capacity for incredible innovations of science, technology and society. This century could end up being humanity's greatest triumph. The future is up to us.
This week I only seek to know more about the science behind the Anthropocene and the Holocene. I tried to find the official announcement of the Anthropocene but I do not know the exact year it was officially released. I am going to keep looking in the coming weeks.
