Week 9: Planetary Boundaries Framework Pt. 4 - Post 3
Planetary Boundaries Framework Pt. 4 - My Thoughts
This week was one of my favorites, as the final lecture was a synthesis of all previous information. The conclusions of the nine planetary boundaries is global sustainability, which was the point of the class. I am glad that I can see global sustainability as a big picture issue, now I just wish for ways to operationalize it. Since I have been through the in-depth explanations of each boundary its exciting that I understand the graphic by the SRC, or the Stockholm Resilience Center. This graphic is the focal point of their research. It was heavily referenced in the first couple of weeks, so I am glad I actually know what it means now. I am getting close to my presentation date, so I am preparing for that. I believe it will be an informative, if not complex, synthesis of all the information from this course
My questions for this week come from the topic of novel entities. In the lecture Dr. Sarah Cornell referenced the synthetic chemical DDT, but I am curious as to what other synthetic chemicals are considered dangerous novel entities? I wish to know what they are, where they come from, and the issues they cause? I think novel entities are a very good example of anthropogenic interference with the Earth's natural systems.
